"I would rather be a good man than a good king."

Thor Odinson is not a terribly complicated man. He is stubborn, proud and loyal, often to his own detriment, and it takes quite a lot to change his mind once he's made it up. Thor has been raised to be a prince of Asgard and, eventually, to be its king and to that end, he is very confident in who he is and who he will become someday. That confidence can be shaken when things don't go precisely his way, most notably during his exile to Midgard, but it is difficult to truly break him.

Thor is gregarious. He is very used to being the center of attention and thrives upon having all eyes in a room set upon him. Thor is never happier than when he is holding court - be that the formal court in Asgard or simply among the Avengers at a party. He loves to engage with others and loves to see smiles on faces, to hear laughter and join in. He takes pleasure in the fleeting things in life: good food, good drink, love. He feels great joy and great sorrow, bearing both highs and lows in dizzying heights.

While his hallmark is his physical strength, Thor also has a great heart. When we are first introduced to him within the halls of Asgard in Thor, he is haughty and proud, born to be a king and wearing a mantle he has not earned. Upon exile to Midgard by his father and after fighting Loki to protect those who could not protect himself, he discovered a deeper emotional strength that he carries with him both in battle in his own realms and in defense of Earth alongside the Avengers. He loves deeply, he cares deeply and he desires, more than anything, to make his father proud of him. Later, this desire extends to Jane Foster and even, to some extent, to the other members of the Avengers. He wants to be worthy of the mantle of Prince of Asgard and wants to be worthy as a Champion of Midgard. Everything Thor does is in broad strokes and bold colors; there is very little subtlety to him.

"I am Thor, son of Odin, and as long as there is life in my breast, I am…"

Thor can be arrogant, even now, and he is hot-tempered. His patience can be short when dealing with things that he doesn't quite understand and rather than stop and listen, rather than reveal a weakness, he lashes out in anger instead. He also has a weak spot for his brother, Loki, no matter how many times Loki has tried to harm the innocents of both Midgard and Asgard. He will always be loyal to Loki as his brother, even if they do not share blood, and will throw himself between Loki and all others; Thor feels that Loki is his responsibility and his alone and refuses to take no for an answer in that regard.

Thor is, in many ways, a man outside of time. The realm of Asgard is much more like feudal Scandinavia than the modern world and while technology is far beyond the ken of Earth (blurring with what some might call magic), the ways of speaking and interacting with others are formal and reserved. While he isn't easily embarrassed, Thor does often act in ways that are not in keeping with the modern world and has a warrior's perspective on everything; if he cannot punch his way through it, Thor has very little patience for it.
